As a life coach, I often share personal stories to help others learn and grow. One story that comes to mind is my journey of being an over-giver, always putting others’ needs before mine.

About six years ago, I recognized that I was putting my family’s needs ahead of mine. Besides serving my clients, I said yes to volunteering for a local marketing expo, supporting friends through challenges, and never hesitated to offer my assistance.

I Love helping others!

I pride myself on being reliable and supportive. However, as time passed, I felt drained and overwhelmed. I was neglecting my needs and desires, sacrificing my well-being for the sake of others to the point where I was emotionally depleted and physically exhausted. In full disclosure, this is only one example of when I had over-extended myself.

It was challenging at first, and I faced resistance from some people who were accustomed to me always being available. At the same time, I heard an inner calling to make a radical change, to go beyond feeling balanced, and to prioritize consistent self-care and activities that rejuvenated me.

My recovery plans

My recovery (and beyond) plan included daily meditation, more realistic appointment planning, weekly group classes and coaching support, extra doses of being alone in nature, exercise, music, dance, and movies and books that made me laugh. With practice, I got better at saying no to others and yes to my needs.

Feeling overwhelmed and burned out is a common experience in today’s fast-paced world.

Most people are moving so fast that they must remember to assess what is working and what is not. Others know their needs but postpone addressing the apparent changes they must make.

As a life and business coach, I serve my clients by co-creating a customized Human Design recovery plan and accountability check-ins to execute their plans when they suffer from burnout or neglect.

Stop neglecting your needs

If you are like my clients, you may need help recognizing your tendencies to over-give and neglect. We all need reminders that self-care isn’t selfish but essential for living a fulfilling and purposeful life.

This post is more than my life story. It is about sharing knowledge and experiences that will assist you if you are struggling with * Saying yes instead of no to others’ needs * Neglecting your physical, emotional, or financial needs * Shutting out distractions * Allowing others to take advantage of you * Feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
