What is self-love?

Is it blowing kisses to the bathroom mirror? Does it mean wrapping our arms around ourselves when we feel sad or joyful?

There is another direction. Loving ourselves is vital to our well-being, our community, and our world.

Human Design has a term, “Enlightened Selfishness.” The opposite of being ego-centered. Though it could look the same from the outside looking in. It is the kind of selfishness that considers our distinctiveness first and foremost; knowing and accepting our skills, talents, and even our limitations.

When we can trust in and radiate from our uniqueness, we move from self-centered to serving. As the flight attendants instruct; put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.

Within this week of love and affection, there is an invitation to elevate your self-love. Perhaps you can think of one aspect of yourself you’ve swept under the rug or have been criticizing.  What is that?  Nourish that part with your love and acceptance.

“There is nothing like self-love. It is the basis of all love. It is only when you can love yourself that you are free to love – objectively love – not subjectively love. All of that begins with you living out your nature.”
